Arsenal 1998

England

Coach: Arsène Wenger

Arsène Wenger's first full season in charge delivered his first trophies at the club: the Premier League and FA Cup double in 1997-98, achieved by overhauling the more physical Arsenal of the George Graham era with continental ideas around diet, sports science and a more expansive style of play. Dennis Bergkamp was the creative fulcrum, Ian Wright the poacher, and a back four of Lee Dixon, Tony Adams, Steve Bould and Nigel Winterburn that had been together for years provided defensive solidity underneath newer arrivals like Emmanuel Petit and Patrick Vieira in midfield. Petit and Vieira barely had time to celebrate the domestic double before both were called up by France for the 1998 World Cup on home soil that summer — Petit scored the third goal in the final as France beat Brazil 3-0, meaning two members of this Arsenal squad went straight from winning England's double to lifting the World Cup within weeks. It was the platform Wenger built on for the rest of his revolutionary spell in North London, culminating six years later in the unbeaten 'Invincibles' season.
