Jupp Heynckes capped his final season in charge of Bayern Munich with an extraordinary treble in 2012-13 — Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League — with the European title secured in an all-German final against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley, won 2-1 through a late Arjen Robben winner after Mario Mandžukić and Ilkay Gündoğan had traded first-half and equalising goals. The squad marked the full maturation of a core built around Manuel Neuer in goal, Philipp Lahm and Jérôme Boateng in defence, and the pairing of Robben and Franck Ribéry providing width and end product from wide areas, with Bastian Schweinsteiger and a young Thiago Alcântara dictating tempo in midfield. It was Bayern's fifth European Cup and their first since 2001, arriving after painful final defeats in 2010 (to Internazionale) and 2012 (on penalties to Chelsea, in Bayern's own stadium), making the Wembley triumph feel like the release of years of accumulated frustration.
