Galatasaray became the first Turkish club to win a major European trophy in 2000, beating Arsenal on penalties in the UEFA Cup final in Copenhagen after a goalless 120 minutes — a result that remains one of the defining achievements in Turkish football history and is still celebrated annually by the club's fanbase. Coached by Fatih Terim, one of the most influential figures in modern Turkish football both as a manager and later as a long-serving national team coach, the squad blended Turkish internationals with a smaller number of foreign signings, reflecting a period in which Turkish clubs were beginning to compete more seriously in continental competition. The Copenhagen final was notoriously marred by violence between rival fan groups in the build-up, overshadowing what was, on the pitch, a tightly contested and ultimately deserved Galatasaray victory.
