Manchester United 1999

England

Coach: Alex Ferguson

The Treble side — stoppage-time goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final in Barcelona, sealing an unprecedented Premier League, FA Cup and European Cup sweep for Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United. Bayern had led since Mario Basler's sixth-minute free-kick and hit the woodwork twice in the closing stages, appearing to have the tie won before Sheringham, on as a substitute, bundled in an equaliser in the first minute of stoppage time, and Solskjær, another substitute, turned in the winner moments later — a swing so sudden that Bayern's players were still setting up to receive the trophy when United scored again. David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Roy Keane (suspended for the final itself after a booking in the semi-final) formed the core of a homegrown midfield, while Peter Schmeichel, playing his last match for the club, marshalled the defence. The treble remains the standard against which every subsequent English club season is measured, and the Camp Nou comeback is replayed every May as one of the most dramatic finishes in football history.
